Hoses may look simple, but there are many things to consider in designing a hose for a specific application. Our engineers work with our customers, factories, and in-house inspection lab to ensure that all hoses meet or exceed specifications.

Let’s look at some of the things we consider when determining hose anatomy, materials, manufacturing, and applications.

CONSTRUCTION Whether used to carry liquids, gases, or air, most hoses have three layers. The first — commonly known as the tube — is the innermost layer. Typically rubber, the tube has two critical functions: to contain the substance being conveyed and to resist being broken down chemically by that substance. The tube may need to be reinforced by fabric or wire, and this reinforcement is the second layer of most hoses. In addition to helping the tube withstand internal pressure, reinforcement also helps protect the tube from compression or other potentially damaging outside forces. The third, outermost layer is the cover. The cover’s main functions are to protect both the tube and reinforcement from abrasion or other damage, and to resist deterioration due to ozone or weather.

Common Applications for Formed HosesMATERIALS Material selection depends on what the hose will be required to do. Conveying water, for example, may suggest ethylene propylene (EPDM). Nitrile (NBR) is a frequent choice for oil and fuel hose tubes. Chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM) is often used as a fuel hose cover material. Many other materials are used in hose construction, from chloroprene (CR) and silicone (VMQ) to specialty polymers like fluoroelastomer (FKM) and even polymer combinations.
