Filtration Products
RL Hudson filtration products protect people and equipment from the effects of contaminants in air, water, oil, fuel, and hydraulic fluid. RL Hudson can supply an extraordinarily wide variety of materials and designs, with capabilities ranging from large-particle screening to sub-micron contaminant removal. Whether your application calls for a custom-designed component or one made to your print, our material experts and design engineers understand what it takes to meet your most demanding requirements.

Filtration media include metal and plastic mesh, paper, natural and synthetic fabrics, natural and synthetic fibers, sintered metal powder, activated charcoal, ion-exchange resins, and polyurethane and plastic foam. Disposable, permanent re-usable, and backflushing (flow reversal) filters are available. Many of our filtration products provide a dual function; examples include acid-neutralizing coolant filters and oil- and water-separating compressed-air filters.
Filters are judged by the size of the particles they trap, the amount of restriction that a clean filter creates in the fluid flow, the filter’s useful life, and, of course, cost. Certain specialty filters, such as charcoal odor filters, water and oil separators, and acid-neutralizing coolant filters, must meet additional criteria.

AIR FILTERS are used whenever incoming air quality is important, notably in ventilation systems, engines, and compressors. Airborne particulates may include abrasive dirt and dust, ash, pollen, fertilizer, spray mist, and, in marine environments, salt and salt spray.
FUEL FILTERS Modern gasoline and diesel engines are particularly sensitive to fuel contamination. Fuel-injected engines must be protected against dirt that clogs injectors and wears pumps and valves, while the carburetors used on outdoor power equipment have tiny fuel passages, low fuel pressures, and very low flow rates that must be precisely and consistently controlled. Diesel fuel filters must also trap water, which can severely damage engines.
OIL FILTERS used on engines must effectively remove metallic particles and abrasive combustion by-products. Oil filters vary widely in their ability to trap particles in the 3-to-10 micron size range, a diameter that is close to that of typical bearing clearances. Oil filters are either spin-on or cartridge (no integral housing) type and may be full-flow, proportional-flow, or by-pass.
WATER FILTERS are of two basic types: filter screens such as those used in appliances (which are often back-flush filters) and engine cooling system filters. Cooling system filters trap rust, corrosion, and scale that can clog water passages. Many are designed to add neutralizing chemicals to the coolant. Coolant filters may also be used in hydraulic system cooling circuits.
HYDRAULIC FILTERS may be placed in the high-pressure circuit or in the return circuit, and are used with petroleum-based oils, emulsions, synthetic hydraulic fluids, and lubrication oils. Hydraulic systems require scrupulous
