A FLEXIBLE SOLUTION TO A CUTTING EDGE PROBLEM

The RL Hudson Design Team Invents a Unique Component to Efficiently Couple a Diesel Engine to a Hydraulic Pump.

The proposed design was modeled using Pro/E® solid modeling software.

The design was tested using Abaqus® Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software.

THE CHALLENGE

A manufacturer of lawn and garden equipment asked us to develop a flexible coupling that would connect a small diesel engine to a hydraulic pump.

THE SOLUTION

Using extensive FEA analyses to optimize the rubber geometry, RL Hudson engineers designed a unique torsional coupling consisting of rubber molded over aluminum inserts and steel shims that combine to provide high torsional stiffness while accommodating angular misalignment.  Our material development team created a special fatigue-resistant rubber compound and a robust rubber-to-metal bonding process to ensure that the couplings would provide long service life.
