Effects of Environment.

The environment in which a shaft seal operates has a huge influence on the design of the seal. The fluid being sealed and any external fluids that may contact the seal must be considered. Both the underlip and ambient (sump) temperatures are important. The speed of the shaft and the pressure under which the seal must operate are both critical factors, especially in high-pressure applications. The type and amount of lubrication must be fully understood. If necessary, provisions must be made for excluding contaminants. Keep in mind that the tabular data presented in this section is intended to show trends, not absolute results.
