Excessive trimming is
typified by a flattened area on the seal’s O.D. and/or I.D. (see Figure
62). This flattening results in an
out-of-tolerance (I.D.
to O.D. measurement) condition. Keep in mind that
problems can result even if “excessive” trimming
is avoided. Imperfect trimming or buffing to remove flash can
result in a much coarser seal surface. Both excessive
trimming and buffing are the result of improper
removal of flash. (For maximum acceptable trimming,
see Table 26.)
