| The
metal(s) in use must be hard enough to hold up
under service conditions,
especially in dynamic
seals. Bronze, aluminum, brass, and other soft
metals are not well suited for glandular use.
Steel and cast iron are much better choices. Hard
chrome plate, burnished, or honed surfaces are
best. Though circumferential (crosswise) scratches
on a cylinder or
bore may not be problematic, surfaces must not
have longitudinal (lengthwise) scratches. CONSTRUCTION
